Sunscreen info you need to know!

Hello!!! Happy Summer!! Hope you are enjoying your summer so far! I am constantly preaching about sunscreen and reminding people to always use it. Whether you tan or burn doesn't matter, sunscreen is an absolute necessity to your daily beauty routine. Women and MEN!!

With all the changes the FDA is finally making with sunscreens, including the way they are marketed & made; I felt that it was important not only as a makeup artist but a fair skinned redhead to educate myself on all the new sunscreen standards. And of course I would be no proper promoter of sunscreen if I did not share all my useful information with you! So without further adieu...

What's happening?
For the last 30+ years sunscreens have focused on sunburn protection. Which is caused by ultraviolet b radiation from the sun (UVB rays).  There has been little attention on UVA rays which contributes to skin cancer and early signs of aging. In an effort to ensure that sunscreens meet modern day standards and effectiveness the FDA is making changes to the way sunscreen is made & marketed. This way consumers may have the proper information when choosing sun protection.

What's changing?
-Sunscreen products that pass the broad spectrum test are to be labeled as "broad spectrum." Indicating that the product has both UVB & UVA protection. The test measures a product's UVA protection relative to its UVB protection.  Studies have shown that sunscreens with a broad spectrum of spf 15 or higher have reduced the risk of skin cancer and early aging. Non broad spectrum sunscreens must state on the product they only provide sunburn protection.
-No sunscreen is "waterproof" they all eventually wash off. Therefore sunscreen products will be labeled as "water resistant" if they are tested and pass the required SPF test procedure. Sunscreens that are labeled "water resistant" will be required to state how long the sun protection is effective for (40 mins. or 80 mins.) and how often it needs to be reapplied.
-Sunscreens can not claim to provide sun protection for more than 2 hrs without reapplication.
-Sunscreens must also now include "drug facts" information on the back of the bottle.

All of the new standards will also apply to any cosmetic and moisturizing products that claim to provide SPF sun protection.

Some of these rules have already taken effect but most sunscreen companies will be required by the summer of 2012 to make the changes. In the meantime here are a few products I love that offer both UVA & UVB protection!

Great for face & body
broad spectrum 30.

Amazing daily moisturizer w/broad spectrum spf 30
Skin Ceuticals Ultimate UV Defense.

And for the kiddos, it is so important to start good sunscreen
habits when they are young!

Thank you so much for reading! Hope this gives you a little more information on what to look for the next time you go to buy sunscreen. Also check out this amazing article by my friends at Bellasugar, it's the best sunscreen lesson you'll get!

Enjoy your summer!!! Don't forget to drink plenty of water and always always put on sunscreen!! ALWAYS!!!

It aired!!!

Finally... The episode of America's Next Top Model that I worked on aired last week.  I must admit I was once a big fan of the show, always obsessing over the photo shoots. From the wardrobe, to the photographer, the amazing set ups, and of course the awesome makeup I LOVED watching the shoots. So I was super excited when years later a friend asked me to work on the show. The theme of the shoot was Crazy for....... makeup, accessories, shoes, hair, etc... Location was Universal Studios at the Bates Motel. Never in my life did I think I would be doing makeup on ANTM, let alone be apart of an attraction at Universal Studios. But sure enough, every 15 mins a tram would come by and say, "Here to your left is ANTM shooting in episode at the Bates Motel" so I had fun with it waved, and said thanks for coming to see us.....

I did makeup for 3 of the models.
 Brittani was Crazy for shoes!

Molly is Crazy for Accessories!!

And finally the winner of best pic for the week... Jaclyn who was Crazy for Makeup!!! This was a super fun look to do. I put so much mascara on that girl; I had to of gone through a full tube!!

It was such a great experience and something I'll never forget!!! On to the next adventure!!

Stila Time!!!!

Recently I had the pleasure of working with the Stila team for the FIDM fashion show. It's always a blast working with a bunch of fellow makeup artists.  The look was super 80's glam and so much fun to do. Check it out on Stila's blog http://stilablog.blogspot.com/2011/03/get-look-from-fidm-fashion-show.html.

Stila graciously paid me for my time with some AWESOME new products. Here are a few of my favorites!!

First I must start with the Stila Lip and Cheek Stains. I am OBSESSED with them. On the cheek they become a part of the skin, giving off the perfect hint of color without looking like blush or sitting "on top." The colors are gorgeous and they have really cute names. My two favorites and must haves for almost any skin color are:

Yumberry Crush the perfect pink  & Mango Crush the must have coral

For that beautiful dewy skinned glow, I love the All Over Shimmer Powder in Kitten, as well as the Illuminating & Bronzing Tinted Moisturizers.

For some drama at night you can achieve that perfect winged eyeliner with the Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner. It is AHHHH-MAAZZZING, the perfect felt tip applicator and a black so dark you don't have to apply it twice! I also love the Kajal Eye Liner it is super creamy with bold and luscious color that works and looks so nicely smudged into a smokey eye.

And finally the Long Wear Lip Color. Just simply awesome!!

a blog and a mess

Hi!! Welcome to my blog!! I'm so excited to get started on this crazy adventure of blogging. Here I am going to share with you all things makeup, and anything else that puts a smile on my face. Which is a lot!

For my first blog I thought I'd share with you what I found in my makeup kit when I opened it today.  Let's just say it wasn't pretty......

One of my lip tars by Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics exploded!! Ahhhhhh what a mess. Drives me crazy when this happens, or worse the loose eyeshadow powders do they ever NOT make a mess...... Well as you will come to know I have slight OCD when it comes to my makeup kit and being clean/organized. So I came up with a solution to this whole explosion problem...

Not only is it very fun to look at and see all the colors! But it takes up less room in my kit and I can remove the individual pot for on set touch ups! Oh and before you ask but how do you know what color it is.......
I told you OCD. I made an excel spreadsheet with all the color names and emailed it to my phone.  Problem solved, pretty kit once again!!!

By the way I LOVE the OCC lip tars. They are ridiculously pigmented, a little goes a long way, and you can even use them on the eye for super intense color.  Plus OCC is dedicated to making their products vegan & cruelty-free. SCORE!! http://www.occmakeup.com/lips.html

The lip tar palette you can get at Michael's. It's called Darice Jewelry Designer Bead Storage System. $9.99 can't beat that!!!

Have a beautiful day!
